Dr. John Kani honoured on his 80th birthday

Music legend Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse kept the crowd well entertained, while Kani, his son and other actors delivered snippets of their work.

Legendary actor and playwright Dr Bonisile John Kani was present during his 80th birthday celebration to be honoured for his contribution to the performing arts.

The multi-award-winning actor and Order of Ikhamanga recipient celebrated his 80th birthday on August 30 at The Market Theatre in Newtown, in a venue named after him.
The Department of Arts and Culture in collaboration with the Market Theatre held a tribute to Kani.
The internationally acclaimed Kani has through his craft in the arts industry played an integral part in fostering democracy in South Africa.

Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa led the celebration of Kani, who is one of the most respected South African actors.

The vent was also graced by the attendance of former president Thabo Mbeki, his wife Zanele, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Thembi Mtshali-Jones, Florence Masebe, Zoliswa Xaluva, Mfundi Vundla, and other dignitaries and top players in the arts industry.

This celebration was the fifth edition of the Van Toeka Af Living Legends Recognition Series. The series is an initiative that the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture uses to recognise and acclaim South Africa’s living legends in the creative and cultural sectors.
