The all-new Toyota Tacoma may be a preview of the next-gen Hilux

After weeks of anticipation and speculation, the long-awaited unveiling of the 2024 Toyota Tacoma has finally taken place, igniting the passions of off-road enthusiasts in the markets the model is sold! Could our next-gen Hilux look anything like this?

With its competitors receiving their makeovers for the new model year, Toyota has stepped up its game, introducing a host of updates and improvements to satisfy the cravings of adventure seekers.

The all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma has been meticulously redesigned from the ground up, boasting a robust construction and drawing upon the TNGA-F global truck platform shared with its formidable siblings, the Tundra and Sequoia. Designed and engineered specifically for the discerning tastes of the US market, the fourth-generation Tacoma incorporates a new high-strength boxed steel ladder frame, packed with a plethora of features that off-road enthusiasts will find delightfully engaging. A fully redesigned multi-link coil rear suspension has been introduced, which Toyota claims enhances the vehicle’s ride quality and handling capabilities.

Toyota has left no stone unturned in providing an impressive range of powertrain options. The entry-level SR model offers a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that delivers a respectable 170kW of power and 329N.m of torque when paired with the standard eight-speed automatic transmission. Stepping up to the SR5 trim rewards drivers with a more potent version of the same turbocharged engine, producing 201kW of power and 420N.m of torque. Furthermore, this upgrade is complemented by a six-speed manual transmission with automatic rev-matching. For those desiring even more power, the upgraded engine in the SR5, coupled with the eight-speed automatic transmission, elevates the output to an impressive 207kW of power and 429N.m of torque.

At the pinnacle of the Tacoma line-up, Toyota introduces an enticing option previously unseen in this iconic mid-size pickup. A hybrid engine, bearing the revered I-Force Max branding has made its grand entrance. This groundbreaking powertrain integrates a 1.9kWh battery pack and a 35kW electric motor with the turbocharged 2.4-litre engine, generating an exhilarating total output of 243kW of power and an impressive 630N.m of torque.

While rear-wheel drive remains the standard configuration for trims such as the SR and SR5, Toyota has made enhancements, now equipping them with a limited-slip differential. The four-wheel-drive models receive additional features, including an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high- and low-range gearing, along with an upgraded Active Traction Control system featuring a limited-slip differential. For those seeking the pinnacle of capability, the top-of-the-line Limited model, equipped with the hybrid I-Force Max engine, offers full-time four-wheel drive with a centre-locking differential, ensuring unrivalled performance in any off-road environment.

On the inside, the redesigned interior showcases a standard eight-inch touchscreen, which serves as the central hub for infotainment functions. The Limited, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter trims boast an impressive 14-inch display as standard, complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. A smaller seven-inch cluster is included as the standard offering.

Both displays incorporate Toyota’s acclaimed infotainment interface, which debuted in the Tundra, providing seamless integration with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. To further elevate the driving experience, wireless phone charging is also included, and for audiophiles, an optional 10-speaker JBL audio upgrade is available, complete with the intriguing option of a removable JBL Bluetooth speaker.

Toyota has not released any pricing regarding the new Tacoma, but more information will be disclosed closer to an on-sale date. Expect the new Tacoma to go on sale later in 2023. With the next-generation Hilux eagerly expected late into the following year or early in 2025, this all-new Toyota Tundra may be a preview of what is to come for the local bakkie market.
