To stop driving, will save fuel but can we?

To drive or not? It is like being stuck between a rock and a hard place but of course, mindful driving will use less fuel.

Yes, by applying your mind and employing a number of relatively simple techniques, you can shave off some money from your holiday fuel budget. How does saving a possible 20% sound to you?

Here is how MasterDrive drivers do it.

• First and foremost – ensure that your tyres are correctly inflated. If you want surety on this, buy yourself a pressure gauge and check the tyre pressure your self.
• When last did you service your car? Dirty fuel and air filters will affect your car’s performance which will affect fuel consumption.
• Keep the engine revs below 3 000r/min if you drive a petrol engine. With a diesel engine, you can go lower – 2 500r/min.
• Be sure to lose any unnecessary weight. MasterDrive suggests that every 50kg of weight can cost you 2% on fuel use.
• Drive at a constant speed and within the legal limit. Driving at 100km/h instead of 120km/h, can reward you with a 20% saving.

• Ensure that trailers, caravans and boat trailers are roadworthy and serviced too.
• Slowing down and driving smoothly while towing, also helps save fuel. Only fill caravan water tanks upon arrival at your destination to reduce weight.
• Chill – you are driving to your holiday destination – you are not trying to beat the next guy to the office.
• Cruising along: be selective about when to use cruise control: it is more effective on even roads with minimal traffic than inclines or busy roads.
• Be careful with that air conditioner – it will cost you in fuel.

Apply the above tips and it will ease the pressure on your wallet.

It will – try it!
