How to choose the right wall colour to sell your home

The do’s and don’ts of choosing a paint colour to attract buyers.

While adding feature walls and bold colours can add an immediate wow factor to your home at a relatively low expense, it can also work against you when it comes to selling your house. RE/MAX share some do’s and don’ts when it comes to choosing the right wall colours to attract prospective buyers:

    1. Brights are a big no: Neutral shades will always have the broadest appeal when it comes time to sell. It is a safe, sleek and modern look that will give your home the best chance of appealing to a large market.
    2. Work the colours: In tight spaces, being strategic with accent walls and colours can create the illusion of more space. Light colours generally make a room feel bigger compared to darker colours.
    3. Stay on trend: When in doubt, opt for the colour greige which is taking the interior world by storm and will freshen up any space. It is neutral and thanks to the slight beige tone, it is not as cold as traditional grey.
    4. Think about your furniture: You don’t want your furniture to clash with your new wall colour, so check that the paint you choose will match your furniture to create a cohesive look.
    5. Go with a tester pot: Whether you know exactly which colour you want or are feeling indecisive, getting a tester pot of the colour or colours you have in mind will give you the opportunity to try a small patch on the wall. Take a look at this patch in the morning, at noon and in the evening, as the tone might change depending on the light and time of day. This will give you a realistic idea of what the colour looks like in the room vs in the paint shop.
