3 Tips for having a good time travelling with toddlers

Although travelling by car can be tough with kids of all ages, travelling with toddlers presents a unique set of challenges.

Are you planning a short getaway before your tot goes back to pre-school next week? If you thought leaving town with a baby was difficult, wait until your tot reaches the terrible twos. Toddlers are more aware of their environment and ready to explore than babies, who are easily portable and sleep for most of the day. Disrupting your child’s schedule can also contribute to irritability and tantrums.

Although travelling with toddlers can be challenging, these tips will help you minimise the hassles and increase the fun.

Pack carefully

Travelling with a toddler is like touring with a rock band – your child needs a lot of gear. Bring extra nappies, wet wipes, and wardrobe changes, as well as more than you think you’ll need. It’s critical to keep these products within easy reach. Don’t forget your toddler’s favourite toy, a sippy cup, and a pacifier if your toddler uses one. Use your phone or tablet to download your toddler’s favourite music or audiobooks for the trip. Buy cheap toys, such as puzzles and mess-free colouring books, and wrap them like presents. Then, as your toddler becomes fussy during the trip, hand them out one by one.

Travel at the right time

Take into account your toddler’s sleep schedule. While it’s best to choose a departure time that coincides with your child’s sleep cycle, there are pros and cons of travelling during the night or early in the morning. For some families, starting your toddler’s road trip right before nap time or in the evening before bedtime might be the best option, but for most families, an early morning departure when it’s light and easier to navigate unknown roads is likely the best time.

Ensure your toddler is secure and comfortable

Using a car seat is the best way to protect your toddler while travelling in a car. The ideal car seat is one that is appropriate for your child’s weight, size, and age, as well as the make and model of your vehicle. Car seat covers can protect your child’s skin from the harsh textiles used in their car seat while increasing their comfort. A soft cotton seat cover will keep unexpected things away from your child’s skin and will function as a barrier between them and their car seat. Your toddler should sit/sleep in their car seat for no more than two hours at a time, so be sure to take regular breaks along your journey and let your tot stretch their legs.
