Three travel resolutions to stick to this year

Make your travels that much better with these tips.

After being cooped up at home for almost two years, 2022 is all about getting out there and experiencing the joy of travel again…and we’re not saying it has to be outrageous, overseas, outlandishly expensive trips. Take some notes on how to make this your year of travel and what to do to make sure you enjoy it fully.

Unplug and disconnect

Are you guilty of taking photos of every little moment, view and meal while on holiday? It’s easy to get sucked into the temptation to photograph absolutely everything while traveling, but instead of looking at it all through your screen, try looking at your getaway through your eyes. Leave your phone at home and rather spend your time actually being present and involved in creating those memories instead of just trying to capture them all.

Look for local

The local tourism industry needs our support, so before you hop onto the next plane out of the country, rather look closer to home and explore within your province or the South African border and you’ll be surprised how much there is on offer. Look for the hidden gems and small tourism setups for a unique stay with a proudly South African feel. Can’t get away for a full week or long weekend due to work commitments or budget constraints? Why not day-cation? Do the touristy things you usually wouldn’t do. Bungee jump off the Orlando Towers in JHB, SUP in the ocean in Durban or enjoy sea-side cocktails at Tobago’s at Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront in Cape Town. Fill your day with activities that you usually reserve for a full holiday and enjoy them to the full.

Go solo in style

Pre-pandemic, in 2019, about 71% of all searches on Cheapflights.co.za were done for one person while, late in 2021, that number rose to 77% showing that solo travel is on the rise. So what are you waiting for? No need to wait for others to hop on board. Enjoy some “me time” and spoil yourself with time away doing exactly what you want to do. Splurge if you can and want to and go on a luxury trip such as the incredible Kruger Shalati: The Train on the Bridge if you want something truly special. It’s quite literally a train on a bridge that has been converted into luxury accommodation. It stands over the Sabie River and the views, service and overall experience are spectacular. Or arrange an epic overland adventure if you so wish. The point is: feel free to splurge on your next holiday if you have the means to do so.
