Reasons for your child to eat organic

Is organic food really healthier for your child? Is it really worth the expense? We take a look at the many benefits of an organic diet.

Are you considering an “organic” diet for your child? If so, read on!

The definition of organic

What exactly does the term “organic” on a food label mean? Organic agricultural goods are those that support a food production system that promotes ecological balance and biodiversity, improves soil and water quality, and protects ecosystems and wildlife. No synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, or genetic engineering are permitted.

Choosing organic foods for your family has health benefits as well. According to research, organic foods contain more antioxidants than conventional foods since they are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides.

Scientists believe that when plants have to battle to survive (without the assistance of synthetic pesticides), they create more phytochemicals, which act as the plant’s natural defense system. Indeed, phytochemicals are responsible for some of the key advantages of eating more plant foods, such as improved heart health, improved cognitive function, and a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

Organic food is relatively new to South Africa, but it is taking off in popularity. Although it is a bit more expensive, here are some good reasons to eat organic wherever possible:

Reduces pollution

The pesticides and fertilizers used on farms pollute the environment, and not only in the immediate vicinity. They also get washed into rivers and head downstream, poisoning everything along the way. Around the world, synthetic fertilizer has caused several “dead zones” – areas of the ocean which are critically low in oxygen. So eating organic will help keep chemicals out of the air, water, soil and most importantly, our bodies.

Protect your children

The safety of various chemicals used in conventional farming has only been tested on adults, not children. There is even a risk of your baby being exposed to such chemicals before he or she is born. Scientific studies have demonstrated that pesticides have a link with cancer and can decrease fertility, among other things.

Better taste, more nutrients

Organic produce often tastes better than chemically enhanced products. They also show consistently higher levels of antioxidants, which can only be more beneficial for your body.

Support the farmers

If you make an effort to eat organic, you contribute to helping support the farmers who grow these crops. Often these are families who desperately need support, especially in South Africa where organic food is not as popular as overseas. And bear in mind that not only are you supporting the farmers, but you’re also supporting the environment – a double benefit!

Eat with the seasons

Because organic produce has a more limited shelf-life, it also encourages us to eat according to the seasons and to enjoy local fruits and veggies.
