Strauss & Co heads to KZN for valuation day

Leading South African fine art auction house, Strauss & Co, is heading to Pietermaritzburg and Durban on 15 and 16 February 2022, giving KwaZulu-Natal residents the opportunity to have the value of their art assessed and to learn more about the South African art market.

Leading South African fine art auction house, Strauss & Co, is heading to Pietermaritzburg and Durban on 15 and 16 February 2022, giving KwaZulu-Natal residents the opportunity to have the value of their art assessed and to learn more about the South African art market.

Taking place at the Tatham Art Gallery (Pietermaritzburg) on Tuesday 15 February and KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts (KZNSA) Gallery (Durban) on Wednesday 16 February, the valuation comes ahead of Strauss & Co’s much-anticipated Johannesburg live sale in May and its ongoing online-only auctions.

Strauss & Co’s valuation days are highly enjoyable events, known for creating an atmosphere and experience akin to the popular BBC television programme, Antiques Roadshow. In recent years, there’s been palpable excitement with the discovery of some high-profile works.

Two works by South Africa’s flamboyant Russian painter Vladimir Tretchikoff, unearthed in KZN, sold successfully on Strauss & Co’s November 2021 auction. Ballerina sold for R2 100 000 and White Orchids went for R900 000. On the same sale, Sangoma, by renowned South African artist George Pemba, sold for R350 000, and the same artist’s Open Air Concert achieved R400 000. Both of these iconic works came from sellers in KZN.

There is a depth and breadth of 20th century South African art that frequently comes to light on valuation days and works by artists such as Hugo Naudé, Walter Battiss, Gerard Sekoto, John Mohl, and Adriaan Boshoff, among others, are being sought by our highly professional team of specialists who will be on hand to value your works of art.

Strauss & Co plays a dynamic role in the South African art market. Their live sales in Johannesburg and Cape Town are not-to-be-missed events, and the ongoing series of online-only auctions is an accessible way for new art buyers to learn about and bid on affordable fine art and collectables. International buyers across the world can also bid in real time, no matter where they are located, on both live and online-auctions thanks to Strauss & Co’s digital transformation since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Themed auctions have put the spotlight on different areas of the market. The selection of works gathered for IN/SIGHT: JH PIERNEEF, a first-of-its-kind auction dedicated to this modernist master, included paintings, drawings and linocuts made through the first half of the twentieth century. It proved his status as the most beloved of South African landscape artists when all 69 lots in this single-artist auction sold in an historic ‘white glove’ sale.

The themed September 2021 auction sale, Impression/Expression: From Hugo Naude to Georgina Gratrix, highlighted a fine selection of artists who were influenced by the European art movements of Expressionism and Impressionism and attracted both seasoned and new buyers. Themes of Surrealism, Animals in Art, and Watercolours are planned for 2022, as well as a single-artist sale of works Irma Stern.
