Five tips to help you take a break

Keep your mind and body happy and healthy by making yourself a priority.

You might think self-care is a luxury, selfish or indulgent. Think again! Taking time out of your busy day is a must to prevent yourself from heading for burnout and a healthy way to add happiness to your life. Not sure where to start? Try out these five tips from The Human Edge.

Build up a support network

Having people around you who you can trust and who are there for you is crucial. Spend quality time with your network of people and engage in meaningful interactions, chat about the things that are keeping you up at night and build relationships of mutual support.

Sign up for a hobby

Whether it’s painting, cycling, yoga or learning a language – think about the one thing you would like to learn to do, sign up for a class or course and make it happen. Not only will you learn a new skill, you will also meet new people while doing it. If you are nervous to go on your own, ask your partner or a friend to join you. Scheduling these restorative experiences into your busy week gives you something to look forward to and forces you to take off stressing and thinking about work.

Just unplug for a minute

Be it a staycation or a proper getaway, look at your calendar and block off some time to unplug. Try to break your normal daily routine during this time and stay away from as many of your usual responsibilities and chores as possible. This is time to unwind. Set an automatic reply notice on your emails that you are out of the office and don’t, no matter how tempting it is, check your inbox during your holiday. Take the break to refuel yourself mentally, emotionally and physically. Swim with your kids, play fetch with the ball and enjoy a slow dinner with your partner – do all the things you usually “don’t have time for” and really be present in the moment.
