Five reasons why extra virgin olive oil is so good for you

It’s no secret that cooking with olive oil is the healthy choice, but do you know why that is? We’ve done some digging...

Cooking healthy meals daily can be a daunting task. Make life a little easier by starting with an age-old essential that even the Romans swore by: extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). Here are five reasons why the golden liquid is probably the healthiest fat on the planet:

Keeps cholesterol in check

EVOO is naturally cholesterol free. Even better, it contains high levels (65 – 85%) of monounsaturated fatty acids which help maintain a healthy cholesterol balance.

Lowers the risk or heart disease

Maintaining a healthy cholesterol balance protects the heart and arteries from plaque build-up, reducing the risk of heart diseases.

Protects from oxidative damage

The high levels of polyphenols in EVOO give it strong antioxidant properties (antioxidants also maintain the integrity of the oil by protecting it from oxidation). EVOO is rich in Vitamins A, E, D and K. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant.

Fights against cancer

EVVO contains antioxidants, which are known to fight and neutralise the free radicals in our bodies. Having too many free radicals in your body can cause oxidative stress, which has been linked to many forms of cancer.

Helps prevent or delay the onset of diabetes

The monounsaturated fat can benefit non-insulin-dependent diabetics, according to SA Olive. Though the impact of specific bioactive components within EVOO on diabetes is an emerging area of research, the impact of the Mediterranean diet, in which EVOO is the primary added fat, is well established.
