Weekend viewing

Stay in, get cosy and watch any one (or all three) of our selected movies for the weekend.

We’re starting with a sports drama that tells the story of a basketball phenom who had everything going for him… but, instead, he chose to walk away from the game, forfeiting his possible bright future. Then we’re switching to a dramedy that humorously exposes the pitfalls, pressures and high expectations of raising kids in a society obsessed with success and social media image. Or gather the family for an animated adventure that follows the journey of a 12-year-old as he searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams.

Jack Cunningham was a high school basketball superstar who suddenly walked away from the game for unknown reasons. Years later, he’s now stuck in a meaningless job and struggling with alcoholism – the very thing that ruined his marriage and his hope for a better life. But Jack soon gets a shot at redemption when he becomes the basketball coach for his alma mater, a programme that has fallen on hard times since his teenage glory days. The Way Back is now showing on Showmax.

The Guide to the Perfect Family is a mainstream comedy that raises the question and humorously exposes the difficulty and complexity of raising children in a society of ultra-performance, nourished by parents who, wanting to give the best to their children, end up suffocating them. Now showing on Netflix.

A 12-year-old boy searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world. Watch Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax on M-Net Movies 3, channel 107 on July 17 at 4:50pm.
