Constraint on dealer sales remains relentless

“Factors such as the easing of lockdown restrictions, a continued low interest rate and the high number of new models launched in the last six months mean that buyer appetite is at an all-time high. The biggest hurdle at this stage, though, is getting customers the car they want in the specification they want,” said the CEO of Motus Retail and Rental SA, Corné Venter.

Motus indicated a decrease in passenger sales of 13,9%, light commercial vehicles by 24,3%, medium commercial vehicles 24,2% and heavy trucks and busses by 17,5%.

Top of the log for April 2021 were Volkswagen Polo Vivo and Volkswagen Polo (1 792) with the Toyota Hilux, which once again proved to be the bakkie of choice for most buyers in its segment.

Volkswagen and Toyota still rule the roost in terms of sales, with Hyundai gaining market share.

“With many manufacturers struggling to keep up with the local demand for new vehicles, the shortfall is fuelling used vehicle demand and consequently driving up the prices of used vehicles,” added Venter.

”The outlook for the remainder of 2021 has deteriorated further in recent weeks with supply and demand imbalances now only expected to stabilise towards the end of 2021,” he concluded.
