BMW is introducing its all-new M3 Competition and M4 Competition Coupe to the South African market.

Both models are now available for purchase in Mzansi and both employ an S58 twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline-six engine with 375 kW and 650 Nm of torque.

An 8-speed M Steptronic with drivelogic and three shift programs transmission sends power to the rear axle giving both models a 3.9 seconds sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h. If you want the M xDrive variants, you better exercise some patients because they will only be touching down in SA in the fourth quarter of the year.

The M xDrive links up with Active M Differential, rear-wheel-biased setup, three selectable modes: 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD for pure rear‑wheel drive and deactivated stability control.

Offered as standard is an adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers and M Servotronic steering with variable ratio. M Carbon ceramic brakes can be had as an option while M Compound stoppers are offered as standard.

There is Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) including M Dynamic Mode and, for the first time, integrated wheel slip limitation and M Traction Control adjustable through ten stages. The M3 and M4 Competition models with M xDrive feature 19-inch tyres in front and 20-inch at the back. The performance tyres are optional.

The interior is bolstered with electrically adjustable M sport seats as well as fine-grain Merino leather. M Carbon bucket seats are offered at an extra charge.

There’s also three-zone automatic climate control, LED interior lighting plus the brand’s Live Cockpit Professional that allows Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Connectivity.

For the first time, there is an M Race Track Package that sheds 25 kg thanks to the features such as M Carbon ceramic brakes, special M light-alloy wheels and M Carbon bucket seats.

In terms of the safety system, BMW has expanded the selection to include; Park Distance Control, Front Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Speed Limit Info fitted as standard.

Options include Driving Assistant Professional with Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Navigation, Emergency Lane Assistant, Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant, BMW Drive Recorder and BMW Head-Up Display with M-specific displays.

As mentioned earlier, the BMW M3 Competition and M4 Competition Coupe are now on sale in SA. M xDrive variants to be offered before the end of the year.
