Uncertainty over Gillooly’s Interchange shutdown

'The event was not sanctioned' - SAMWU.

According to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department contingency plans are in place should tomorrow’s shutdown of Gillooly’s Interchange take place.

Earlier this week, rumours circulated on social media that members of the EMPD intended to protest and close-off Gillooly’s Interchange on July 2.

This morning, (July 1), EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng told the NEWS it was unknown if the protest will take place.

“The statement (on social media) which was issued, did not come from the EMPD’s communications office, ” said Mokheseng.

“Despite this, contingency plans are in place to ensure service delivery is not affected should the strike continue.”

National media officer of the SA Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU), Papikie Mohale, said as far as he was aware the strike was postponed.

“The event was not sanctioned,” said Mohale.
