Hot off the heels of the latest BMW 5 Series, the German automaker has recently launched its latest 4 Series model. The international launch took place via a virtual event which gave media as well as fans the world over a first look at the car. One of the biggest talking points since its official unveiling has been its design.

The BMW 4 Series is based on the 3 Series but offers a sportier appeal. The previous generation shared much in terms of technology and design while the latest seems to share more technology than design. The latest 4 Series features a large, elongated double-kidney grille which has been the focus of conversation. Is it pretty? No. Is it eye-catching? Yes. The rest of the front features a neatly designed bumper and the M440i features large vents for a more performance-enhancing look.

The side profile of the 4 Series is neat with a sloping roofline which flows elegantly into the rear boot lid. The long, sleek design is enhanced even further due to the fact that the newcomer is 42 mm longer than its predecessor. The rear features horizontal tail lights with LED technology to complement the slim standard LED headlights upfront.

The car which broke cover, the M440i xDrive, is the flagship in the range, that is until the M4 comes along. This specific model features mild-hybrid technology and power comes from a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder which packs 275 kW and 500 N.m of torque. The M440i xDrive will reach 100km/h in a claimed acceleration time of 4.5 seconds.

BMW will also be offering a 430i model which will feature a powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged motor said to develop 190 kW and 400 N.m of torque which is 5 kW and 45 N.m more than is currently on offer by the German manufacturer. The entry point will be made up of a 420i with 135 kW and 300 N.m as well as a diesel-powered 420d producing 141 kW and 400 N.m of torque.

The interior features much the same design as that found in the new 3 Series. A large digital instrument cluster, as well as infotainment screen, take pride of place on the facia which is somewhat void of clutter. One can also expect the same technology under the skin as that offered by the latest 3 Series.

The new 4 Series will be available in Europe towards the beginning of October although, no official date has been set for the South African introduction as yet. Pricing will be revealed closer to the local launch.
