Video:: Performer at heart turns her chaos into art

She has written, directed and performed in multiple theatre productions in the past few years. Sunel is also a well-known adjudicator at the ATKV and local eisteddfods.

“We all have chaos. I turn it into art,” said Sunel Gilliland (24), a local performing artist and former journalist at the Advertiser.

She is getting ready to perform her latest one-woman show, Chaos tot Kuns, in Bloemfontein at the Vrynge (Vrystaat Kunstefees).

“I became so overwhelmed with my chaotic life that I decided to write a show about it and transform it into art,” said Sunel.

She describes this one-woman show as a comedy with a spark of honest truth and hardships that we all experience.

“The production speaks about my panic every year before my birthday when I realise the year that has gone by did not go exactly as planned.

“In the show I share my internal struggles and triumphs of too much stress, not enough money, too much chocolate, not enough time and all the rest.

“I share real life stories that happened around me as well as the life lessons that the audience will relate to. I speak about my everyday laughing and crying stories and I sing a few songs, of course.”

She also incorporates her sketches into the performance and bring everything that turns her life into chaos all together.

“I quickly learned that when life gives me lemons, I make lemon meringue.”

Sunel is debuting this production in Pretoria on June 22 at the Lier Theatre at the University of Pretoria, followed by the performance at Vrynge in Bloemfontein on July 2, 3 and 5.

Sunel has lived in Boksburg for the past 19 years and has always been most comfortable on stage. She is currently finishing her BA Drama honours degree at the University of Pretoria and is busy with several theatre projects.

Sunel was also seen on the popular kykNET show Elke Skewe Pot 2.
