Feel the bend in future Jaguar Land Rover vehicles

By using heat, future Jaguar Land Rover steering wheels could tell you when to turn.

A PhD study undertaken by Patrizia Di Campli San Vito on the topic of Interactive Systems Research Section at Glasgow University and funded by Jaguar Land Rover, have found that temperature based notifications to the driver of a vehicle could be less distracting.

The partnership saw the Coventry based automaker develop a steering wheel that rapidly increases or decreases in temperature by 6°C on either side of the steering wheel. This is to alert the driver to upcoming turns on the road in low visibility conditions or could be used to indicate when the vehicle is running low on fuel or approaching points of interest.

The new technology could feature as part of Jaguar Land Rover’s sophisticated Advanced Driver Assistance Systems in future models and even further promote driver and vehicle safety.
