SA suffers massive loss to India

India won for the first time against South Africa in World Cup games when the two teams met in a Group B clash at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday, February 22.

South Africa failed to put India under pressure after an early run out by AB de Villiers to dismiss Rohit Sharma in the fourth over.

Player of the match Shikhar Dhawan’s 135 was the major difference between South Africa and India when the two teams went head to head in a Group B clash of the weekend. His innings, together with a 73 from Ajinkya Rahane helped India to 307/7.

Dhawan said, “It was important for to build partnerships through out. After losing the first wicket we just needed to stay at the crease and keep wickets in hand.”

In reply, the South Africans only managed 177 all out after a poor bowling and batting performance. South Africa lost the wicket of Quinton de Kock for 7 after trying to play one too many shots, followed by Hashim Amla for 22.

De Villiers said, “The run outs cost us dearly today, including mine. I feel restricting the Indians to 307 was a good effort.”

Asked whether South Africa may have made a mistake by playing six batsmen instead of seven, de Villiers said, “It turned out to be a good decision after all, after losing Vernon Philander earlier on, I really needed Wayne Parnell’s overs.”

South Africa’s next game is against the West Indies on Friday February 27 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
