Six bands join forces for one night only at the Barnyard

Hosted by the Boksburg Advertiser assistant editor, Leandi Cameron and Lithium’s Dave Beretta Owens, the cream of the new wave of East Rand Rock Bands are joining forces with the publication to raise funds for the Widows and Orphans Fund for Members of the South African Police Service.

Brig Stefan Pieterse will attend the show as the VIP Guest of Honour.

Fans will be able to enjoy the alternative country sounds of Crystal Park and the soaring acoustic force that is Trevor Rebello, as well as the crazy antics of nu-rock sensation Made In Wrong Kong who recently floored audiences on the Barnyard éVoid 30th Year Anniversary tour.

If edgy swamp-rock floats your boat then Dirty Moonshine and The Fever Dogs are sure to be your favourites on the night, and for no-nonsense pop-rock filled with more hooks than a bait shop, look no further than Them Bandits.

Play your part for this worthy cause and join us on November 2, at The Barnyard Theatre, Emperors Palace.

Wez Hitchin, Dirty Moonshine: We know there’s a lot of crime in this country and it’s very sad, because every day there’s a lot of murders. They (the police) are trying to protect us and without them it would be even worse. We have to try and help each other in any way we can.

Roy Epstein, Dirty Moonshine: It’s a good way to get rid of the bad connotation with rock ’n roll music. It’s always affiliated with sex, drugs and rock ’n roll. This is a way to show that it’s not just that, it’s for a good cause. It’s not like they’re (the police) paid very well while they’re protecting us. So, when they’re gone, their families have no financial support. If we can raise a little bit of money in rocking out, then sweet!

Trevor Rebello: I am looking forward to playing, because I don’t often get the opportunity to give back. It is also something which is very close to my heart. I grew up without one parent, so I kind of know what they (the widows and orphans of policemen and women) are going through. Cops often get a bit of a hard time, so it will be nice to all come together and have a good time and give back at the same time.

Steve East, Crystal Park: The concept of crime in South Africa is a big thing to everybody. As a band, we actually write a lot of our material about things that happen in society – stories that we read in the newspapers, stories of the suburb’s legends and myths. So stories of crime and true stories that have happened before have made its way in a lot of our songs. It’s a very personal thing for the band to be involved in something like this and to just give back as much as we can.

Tyrone Parsons, Them Bandits: It’s very cool to be killing two birds with one stone – both playing such an awesome venue in our hometown, and assisting a good cause – assisting the people who protect us which are unbelievably lucky for us.

Kevin Hughes, Them Bandits: It’s a really nice cause to support. We often try support as many charity events as we can. This one, I think, will hold a good place in our hearts, ‘coz a lot of people might overlook these sorts of causes and think that it’s not a bad problem. But I think if we can raise awareness for that and raise money, it’s a very successful show for us in the end.

Ross van den Heever, The Fever Dogs: We just want to give back in a sense and show people of the police community that the energy that rock ’n roll has, that comes across as rebellion, can be taken as a passion. It’s just us being who we are.

Greg Coles, The Fever Dogs: On behalf of all the members, we’d just like to say thank you to SAPS for everything they do. They must bring their leathers and their chains to rock out with us!

Danny de Wet, Made in Wrong Kong: I would like to thank the Barnyard Group for making the new theatre at Emperors Palace available for this worthy cause, and Brig Pieterse for taking time out from his busy schedule to attend and rock with Made in Wrong Kong.

Leandi Cameron, Boksburg Advertiser: Everyday we see what is happening in and around our town – the pain and heartache people suffer, but very little do we think about the people who try to help us be safe. They risk their lives for us, so it is about time we do something for them. – @IschkeBoksburg
