Scoundrelously long-winded

Bel Ami, a film adaptation of the novel by Guy de Maupassant, translated into English as The History of a Scoundrel: A Novel, depicts the life of journalist George Duroy, portrayed by Robert Pattinson.

Once poor, Duroy turns into a womanising, manipulative, yet intelligent man who works his way to the top; achieving greatness among the successful men in Paris.

However, amicably the direct opposite to Pattinson’s cinematic work in the Twilight Saga as the sparkly vampire who is a tortured soul, unable to have sex due to his moral code, this film flips the book, as Duroy has no moral code, and makes love to multiple women in one day.

No disrespect to novelist de Maupassant, but if the film accurately depicts the novel, then it should have rather made the editor’s trash can.

The film is long-winded, tirelessly frustrating and heavily boring – nothing steamy to be found here.

Rating: 2/5.
