Sunward Park High matrics pass with flying colours
The top achievers at Sunward Park High are happy with their overall results.
Eighteen Sunward Park High School matriculants achieved distinctions in the final NSC exams.
Joshua Pillay and Oratile Mbonani obtained eight distinctions with Ayabulela Maphiri obtaining seven and Unathi Masango, Amanda Mlilo, Karabo Mazibuko, Koketso Mokgoko and Cynthia Osunwa achieving six distinctions.
Samukelisiwe Zwane and Reabetswe Raseroka obtained five distinctions with Neo Masha, Khanyisile Magagula, Khanyisa Mbalati, Nhlanhla Ngobeni, Anotida Chatikobo, Talent Gumbo, Mncube Syamthanda and Tshegofatso Nthaudi achieving four distinctions.
Pillay’s final marks were 80% for English, 90% for Afrikaans, 93% for maths, 97% for life orientation, 95% for accounting, 87% for life sciences, 93% for physical science and 98% for religion studies.
The learner said he is thrilled with his distinctions and an overall average of 92%.
“Obtaining eight distinctions feels incredible. I worked extremely hard for this and this is a true testament to my efforts. To be honest, I did not expect this outcome, but I’m happy that my hard work paid off.”
He said the secret to his success is that he consistently studied and set clear goals for himself.
“I also sought help when necessary and ensured I dedicated most of my time to studying and reviewing my work. There were challenges along the way, but I never let them discourage me.
“I kept my eye on the prize and remained determined to achieve my goals,” he said.
Pillay aspires to fulfil his dream of becoming a doctor to make a difference in other people’s lives. His advice to the class of 2023 is to stay focused and motivated.
“Set clear goals and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Time management is important and it can help to achieve your dreams. Also, never give up on your dreams. Work hard and stay determined.
“Remember that with hard work, dedication and perseverance, you can achieve great things. Lastly, enjoy your journey in high school and make the most of it.”

Oratile’s final marks were 82% English, 85% life sciences, 93% Afrikaans, 86% maths, 97% life orientation, 84% geography, 85% physical science and 98% religion studies.
Oratile too is elated and relieved that she passed matric without any academic regrets.“I believe there’s always room for improvement, but I’m happy with what I was able to accomplish.
“My physical science teacher told us it is better for us to give it our all the first time we write exams so that we don’t have any regrets in the future. I adopted this motto.”
Her unconventional studying techniques included prioritising rest when she needed it.
“I studied smartly by making flashcards, practicing topics that I really struggled with, timing myself when answering past matric paper questions and focusing on understanding the concepts and principles being taught,” she explained.
“I used past exam papers from 2008 to 2021 to study.”
She was recently accepted to study dentistry at the University of Pretoria.
“My advice to the Class of 2023 is focus on developing yourself. Know your goals and don’t compare yourself to your peers.
“Be consistent and ask for help from your teachers. Also, there is a lot of help online, especially YouTube videos.”
