Freeway Park Primary learner to compete in championships

Heylinn is determined to bring a medal home.

Heylinn Nelson, a Grade seven learner at Freeway Park Primary School with a good track record of winning sprint, long-distance and walking competitions, will represent her school at the SA Primary Schools Track and Field Championships in Pietermaritzburg from March 19 to 21.

The 13-year-old competed in the Gauteng Athletic Competition 1.5km walk race on March 11 and won it, sending her to the championships.

Nelson said she is excited to compete in the championships. Her main aim is to beat the record of 07:60.

“In my preparation for the tournament, I practise every day by going to the gym and walking around it. I got medals in a variety of competitions this year, and I plan to add more to my collection.

“I want to make my family, friends and sport management team proud because they have always been there for me. I would also like to thank everyone who supported me in my journey as an athlete,” she said.
She said she hopes to represent South Africa in the future.

“I plan to continue participating in the running and walking competitions to achieve my goal.”

A Grade five learner at the school, Lois Mvita, who only started doing the long jump, hurdles and relay last year, has collected several medals in various competitions so far, but was, unfortunately, knocked out of the Gauteng Athletic competition.

He said his elimination didn’t discourage him, and he plans to compete again next year.

“I’m happy with my performance, but I’m hoping to do better next year,” he stated.
