Boksburg FC U10 had to dig deep to clinch the Eastern Local Football Association League Three title, which ended on September 23.
The team lost its first league match on April 1 but beat strong teams to win the league with 61 points, 13 points clear of the runners-up, Sunward Park Tigers.
According to Boksburg FC coach Xzenepher Jacobs, the team was unprepared when the league began, but it didn’t derail them from their primary goals – to get good results and win the league.
“The fighting spirit and courage enabled the players to fight back, scoring 122 goals and conceding only 23 out of their 22 matches. The team won 20 matches, drew one match and only lost one,” Jacobs said.
The coach said the outcome would not have been possible without the coaches’ and parents’ support.
“The parents were as committed as the players and coaches. Our goal with the coach I worked with, David Johnson, was to develop these young players,” Jacobs explained.
“Developing players and winning the league is difficult, so we are proud to have achieved both. In the Eastern Cup competition, we knocked out teams from higher divisions but were knocked out by an impressive Bonaero FC, which also won its division.
The team will now enjoy the moment, rest, socialise and prepare for the upcoming season.
“Most of the players will move to a higher division next year, and I encourage players born in 2013 to come to the trails in January, the dates of which will still be released.
“We try to nurture players into respectable, hard-working and responsible young people,” Jacobs said, adding that discipline is crucial because it makes or breaks a player. Talent can only get you so far as a player, but hard work and discipline make a good player.”
