Boksburg cricketer plans to go pro

Aldre Huyzers is determined to improve his cricket playing technique.

Aldre Huyzers (17), from Sunward Park, has played fantastic cricket and was awarded player of the series on August 13 when playing for the Lenasia Premier League U17 team at the Cricket National Championships at the University of Johannesburg.

He was awarded batsman of the series while playing for The Cavalier Cats team at club level in the Lenasia Premier League.

He was selected from the Eastern cricket teams at age 13.

Huyzers said he had played cricket from the age of nine, and he plans to go pro.

“It is always an honour to receive awards, but I didn’t expect to get the player of the series award because I played against good players.

“I think I achieved all I have because of my consistency, hard work and dedication. I think my commitment paid off because I had the second-most runs and was captain of the winning team,” Huyzers explained.

He said what kept him going was his love for the game.

“I have played cricket from a young age, and God also blessed me with a natural skill to play the sport, so I am enjoying myself.

“The most difficult part about being the opening batsman is that you get to face new balls bowled with more speed. The other thing is that you also face the best bowlers of the opposition team.

“Fielding restrictions at the start of a game gave me an advantage to hit more boundaries. A new ball is harder and can be hit further,” he added.

He said he did not only bat because there were other positions he filled, too.

“I’m also a leg spin bowler and a good fielder. I’m also an excellent leader and often a captain of my team.

“I dream of donning the green and gold (Proteas jersey) one day. I want to thank my support structure – my dad, Marthinus, and all my coaches,” he stated.

He said a good cricket player had to be committed, believe in himself and have sportsmanship because cricket was a gentleman’s game.
