Young athlete makes school proud

Baloyi wants to continue being a sportsman in the future.

Parkdene Primary celebrated the achievement of its head boy, Matimba Baloyi (13), who scooped a bronze medal in the U13 800m event at the South African Schools Athletics Championships recently.

The learner, who also plays rugby, said he didn’t expect to win a medal, but believed he could do it.

“Although I trained hard for the race, I knew I was up against some of the best so I didn’t get my hopes up too high,” he said.

“I knew no matter what the outcome, I had the support of my family and school. When I made it into the final all I had on my mind was to finish the race in the top four.”

Matimba plans to continue training and is looking forward to high school.

“I don’t know what the future holds for me. Next year I’m going to Grade Eight and will also be competing in athletics. I will miss the wonderful experiences at Parkdene Primary.”

On his training for rugby and athletics, the athlete said he trains for rugby in January and for athletics in September to ensure he is prepared.

“It’s tough balancing academics and sports, but I manage to juggle it successfully. I want to continue pursuing rugby and athletics.”

Gregory Jon Harris, a teacher and coach to the athlete, said the school is bursting with pride.

“Matimba has achieved extraordinary success in both sports. He shows remarkable focus and dedication, as well as a strong sense of team spirit. He is an excellent role model for his peers, setting a powerful example of how hard work and determination can make a difference,” said Harris.
