Athletes set for green numbers during Comrades Marathon

Since 1921, a total of 13 626 runners have completed the epic ultramarathon more than 10 times each.

On June 11, over 400 athletes from South Africa and around the world will aspire to be inducted into the Comrades Marathon Green Number Club.

Since 1921, a total of 13 626 runners have completed the epic ultramarathon more than 10 times, thus earning their place on the coveted Comrades Green Number Roll of Honour.

Traditionally, runners retain their race numbers from year to year, while after completing 10 Comrades Marathons, the runner is awarded his/her green number in perpetuity, meaning that it is henceforth reserved for its owner.

It is also possible to earn a green number with either three Comrades wins or five Comrades gold medals.

The record for the most Comrades Marathon finishes is held by Barry Holland who has completed 48 and Kleintjie van Schalkwyk who has completed 34, considering that women were not allowed to participate before 1975.

While 2 081 athletes will run in their green number, 406 will aim for green number status and 91 will go for their double green number.

A total of 18 will head towards their triple green number and one very special Comrades athlete will go for his quadruple green number.

The 96th Comrades Marathon will be a down-run on June 11. It will start at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall at 05:30 and ends 12 hours later at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Cricket Stadium in Durban. The route distance is 87.701km. This will be the 48th Comrades down-run.
