Countdown to baseball nationals at Cardinals Diamonds has begun

The tournament will start on April 1 with round-robin matches featuring boys from U10 to U18 and girls’ U18 teams.

With just under a week before the start of the South African National Baseball Championships (NBC), the countdown to the premier baseball event has begun.

Hosted by the Gauteng Provincial Baseball Council (GPBC) at the Boksburg Cardinals diamonds at Boksburg Stadium from April 1 to 11, the event will see 40 provincial teams go hammer and tongs for 11 days.

According to the South African Baseball Union (SABU), the event will be the highlight of the country’s baseball calendar.

“While several teams will be going out to retain their titles, many will be using this opportunity to gain valuable experience.

“Last year’s seniors’ champions, Cape Town Baseball, will go all out to retain their title. There’s no doubt that several other provinces like Gauteng, who this year have a home-ground advantage and newcomers Nelson Mandela Bay who have been promoted to division one, will not let this slide easily,” SABU said in a statement.

The tournament will see around a thousand players in different categories and across multiple divisions in action.

“On the women’s front, fans will see some great baseball with the Free State Gryphons, Gauteng Dodgers and Gauteng Angels in competition.

Dean McKinnon is the president of the Gauteng Province Baseball Federation.

“For fans, friends and families, the event promises to deliver much value and entertainment as the Boksburg Cardinals offer one of South Africa’s top baseball facilities.”

The tournament will start on April 1 with round-robin matches featuring boys from U10 to U18 and girls’ U18 teams.

From April 7, the men’s seniors, U23 and women’s seniors will take to the field until April 10 with the finals following the next day to conclude the tournament.
