Tommy Gun begins quest to unify division

The local boxer wants to become the first South African to unify the cruiserweight division.

Thomas ‘Tommy Gun’ Oosthuizen will go toe to toe with Ugandan Musa ‘Hitman’ Mwanza in a 12-round bout for the African Boxing Union Supreme Cruiserweight title on March 12 at the Carousel Casino in Pretoria.

The Boksburg boxer goes into this match in fine form after convincingly winning three of his previous fights, including a knock-out victory against Godfrey Kamata in November.

Promoter Jani Hebler and her husband, Thomas ‘Tommy Gun’ Oosthuizen.

His promoter, Janie Hebler, said the former IBO world champion in the super-middleweight and light-heavyweight classes is strong, determined and ready for the fight.

“He’s a prime example of fall seven times and stand up eight. He’s been working hard and is extremely focused.
“He has his mind set on his goal, which is to become the first South African to unify the cruiserweight division,” Hebler said.

According to Hebler, if the southpaw is successful in his bout against Ntenge, he will jump into the top 30 in the rankings, which will qualify him for WBC ratings, enabling him to challenge for a world title.

Organised by 5th Element Promotions, the staggered line-up includes five undercard matches which will see Bonita van Jaarsveldt go hammer and tongs with Mitchell Sibongile Mubaya from Zimbabwe in a female lightweight bout.

The battle will be broadcast live on SABC Sport from 14:00.
