Mackenzie Park resident with Down syndrome enjoys outing at marathon

“I really enjoyed myself today.”

In spite of the rush to beat personal best times or to qualify for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons, the Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) Marathon sponsored by Kwikscaff was a family affair.

Some ran, others walked during the race. Some tried to outpace their dogs, others pushed their toddlers in strollers. Grannies and grandpas crossed the line with their grandchildren while couples held hands in a show of love on their way to the finish and one pregnant woman completed the 21.1km.

The event lived up to its mantra of being open to runners and walkers of all fitness levels.

For 24-year old Khadija Kadir with Down syndrome, it was all about motivating children with special needs.

Hand in hand with her mom Shaheena as they crossed the finish line, the Mackenzie Park sported a huge smile on her face and said: “I really enjoyed myself today.”

Shaheena said, “She’s exercising and trying to keep fit. At the same time she is motivating children with special needs. If they are out there, they need to come out for the next marathon because it’s absolutely excellent.”
