Locals conquer Ironman in Gqeberha

The Ironman 70.3 was won by Leon Chevalier (men) and Laura Phillip while the Ironman was clinched by Timothy Hayward and Cindy Friebel, respectively.

Boksburg resident Rieghardt Rautenbach claimed a second-place finish in his age category at the Ironman African Championship in Gqeberha on March 5.

The Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) member finished his swim in 12:34, the 89.2km cycling in 02:28:21, and the 21.1km run in 01:46:13 to complete the competition in a combined time of 04:16:21, finishing ninth overall in the Ironman 70.3.

Triathlete Casper Moodie, from Lakefield, also competed in the Ironman 70.3, finishing in 14th place overall.

Moodie completed the event in a combined time of 04:23:14 to claim fourth place in the men’s 35 to 39 category.

Rieghardt’s father, Collen, and another Boksburg resident, Adele Cowley, took on the tougher Ironman challenge that included a 0.85km swim, a 178.4km cycle and a 42.2km marathon.

Collen was 61st in the 50 to 54 category, while Cowley completed the event in 15:08:05, finishing 23rd in the women’s 50 to 54 category.
