Podium finishes for locals at CGA league meeting

Benoni High Athletic Club's Kaitlyn Mackay claimed her fourth podium finish, while the BAC Donovan Janse van Vuuren won gold in the men's U18 100m and 200m.

As the countdown to the ASA national track and field championships in March continues, local athletes continued their performances on the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) circuit at the province’s fourth track and field league meeting on February 18 at Germiston Stadium.

The athletes are competing to be included in the team to represent CGA at the nationals.

The organisation confirmed each athlete has to take part in three league meetings and the provincial championships next month to be considered for selection.

In the sprint distances, Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) sprinter Donovan Janse van Vuuren clinched the men’s U18 100m and 200m. He won the 100m dash in 11.30 while he finished the 200m in 22.24 for the gold.

Janse van Vuuren’s teammate, Kiera Fouchè finished in second place in the women’s U18 100m in 12.81 seconds, while Pieter Moller was second, behind Janse van Vuuren, in the men’s U18 200m.

In the middle distances, Kaitlyn Mackay, Tayla Bosman and Matthew Mackay from the Benoni High Athletics Club (BHAC) all claimed bronze medals in their categories.

Kaitlyn claimed her fourth podium finish of the season, placing third in the girls’ U16 1 500m while Matthew claimed a bronze medal in the men’s U20 1 500m.

Bosman was also third in the women’s U20 1 500m.

On the field, Moetlo Sefoka from Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC)won the boys’ U16 high jump. The Benoni High learner also won the long jump, leaping 5.70m for the gold.

His teammate, Kearabetsoe Kau was second in the women’s U18 high jump.

BAC’s Fabio de Klerk threw 61.25m to finish second in the men’s U20 javelin.

According to CGA’s track and field chairperson, Maggie Dicks, over 800 athletes participated in the event.
Dicks encouraged the athletes to continue working hard.

“We continue to encourage athletes to do their best to secure their seat to the national championships,” she said.

The final league meeting is on February 25 at Germiston Stadium.
