A day of ups and downs for Benoni athletes at CGA event

Despite many of the club's athletes failing to obtain podium finishes at this event, a few are in good standing for medal positions at the provincials on November 12.

Pamela-Jo Mostert was the Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) stand-out performer at the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) track and field sub-youth third league meeting at Ruimsig Stadium on October 22.

The track athlete was first overall in the U11 girls 80m sprint after winning her heat in 10:68 seconds.

The BNAC middle distance runners Chelsea van Dyk and Hayley Ronaldson also obtained podium finishes in the U11 girls 1 200m.

Chelsea crossed the line at 04:10 to finish second, behind the winner Mathapelo Ntanga (04:09). Hayley completed the podium at 04:15.

For young Kayla Botha, it was a day of so near yet so far as she narrowly missed out on podium finishes in both her categories.

Although she won her heat in the U11 girls 60m sprint, she finished eighth overall. In the U9 girls 600m, she crossed the line in 02:09 to finish sixth overall.

It was also the same case for the club’s Kayla Froneman who won her heat in the U13 girls 200m sprint. She finished sixth overall.

The club’s Amore Steyn was the stand-out performer in the field events. She was the overall winner in the U13 girls javelin, throwing 23.24m to secure first place.

Tatum Coetzer added to the club’s tally after finishing second in the U9 girls turbo-javelin category.

On the track, Chelsey Raath finished in a time of 31.46 seconds to come in second place in the girls U13 200m hurdles.

Despite some events being cancelled due to inclement weather, CGA’s chairperson of track and field, Maggie Dicks, was pleased with the attendance.

Dicks announced that the sub-youth provincial championship will be held on November 12 at Boksburg Stadium.

“We are going to look at the start sheets to credit all the athletes that were entered as one of their leagues, based on the criteria that athletes must compete in two of the three leagues this season.

“We look forward to great support for the provincial championship and the inter-provincial championship scheduled for November 26 in Pretoria.”
