Rieger Park CC gears up for a new season

The season is set to start at the first week of October.

Cricket season is nearing and local clubs are working hard behind the scenes to make sure fans witness a competitive 2022/23 season.

Reiger Park Cricket Club who were currently crowned the 2021/22 Third League winners under the Easterns Cricket Union are looking forward to competing in a new division.

The club, established in 1997 and known as Reiger Park Tigers, won their first league title 23 years ago before claiming it again last season.

According to the club chairman, Paul Canham, the off-season has been very productive for the club.

“We are confident going into the new season. We are aware that it will be challenging, but we feel we are up to the task. We have kept fit by playing friendly matches throughout the off-season,” said Canham.

The chairman, who also was the club’s best batsman, highlighted that the club has a team dedicated to providing much-needed exposure and engagement will be more freely between the fans and the club.

“This season, we are welcoming back our junior structures where we will have U10 and U12 teams. We are excited to be registering our first women’s team, which will offer females the platform to participate and build inclusivity,” said Canham.

He said his team looks up to clubs such as Boksburg CC and Actonville Spurs CC as they have teams that participate in most leagues under Easterns Cricket and have produced quality players.

“Last season, we have learnt that discipline is the difference between winning and losing and even if we have lost, it allows you to be gracious in defeat.

“With a great team spirit, anything is possible. We seek to instil the lessons we learnt to the younger teams.”

Canham expressed his gratitude to fans who supported them during the off-season matches and assured them that the upcoming season would be exciting with tons of quality cricket.
