Memorial ride plans for cyclist killed on Mercury Street

Donovan Theart was hit by a vehicle on Mercury Road in Atlasville on April 20.

The cycling community is mourning the death of Donovan Theart, who was fatally struck by a vehicle while cycling on Mercury Road, Atlasville, on the morning of April 20.

According to Madeleine Lees, a close friend and fellow cyclist, Theart was on a routine ride when a car hit him.
“Emergency services responded swiftly, but he sadly succumbed to his injuries at the scene.”

The 50-year-old leaves behind his wife, Cindy, and their young son, Layken.

“Donovan wasn’t just a rider. He was the heart of many rides. He would never let a fellow cyclist struggle alone. He’d push you up a hill with a gentle hand on your back or slow his pace to keep your spirits up,” said Madeleine.

She added that while Donovan’s first recorded Strava ride was on January 4, 2020, just before the Covid-19 lockdowns, his passion for cycling began long before that.

“Over the years, he became known for his quiet strength, warm encouragement and generous spirit. He made others fall in love with the sport, not because of competition but because of the connection.

“He had this way of making every ride feel like a team effort. You always felt stronger when Donovan rode beside you.”

Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Constable Khakhathi Siphoro said they arrested the driver involved and that investigations are ongoing.

Memorial ride
In tribute to his memory, there will be a memorial ride on April 27, starting at 06:00 from the Bicycle Line at the Summerfields Shopping Centre on Finch Street, Atlasville.

The route will travel via Reier Road to Azalia and Mercury roads, where the group will pause to lay roses in Donovan’s honour.

From there, riders will continue on Mercury Road to Great North Road, turning onto Elgin and Atlas roads before returning to the Bicycle Line.

Coffee will be available afterwards (at your own cost), and the community will gather to reflect and support one another.

Madeleine said the funeral will be on April 25.

“We’re shattered, but standing together for Cindy and Layken, just like Donovan would’ve stood for any of us. His legacy is love, and we will carry that forward.”

Anyone wishing to attend or support the family is welcome, regardless of whether you knew Donovan or if his story touched you.
