Young netball star needs help getting to Dubai

Netball player hopes to raise R64 000 for international tour

Dayanglen’s Lalique Erasmus (15), a learner at Hoérskool Dr EG Jansen, was selected by Blue Runnings Sport International and Triumph Netball company to participate in a netball tournament in Dubai later this year.

An excited Lalique, who plays wing defence, said she developed a love for netball at a young age.

“Now it is as natural as eating to me; something I have to do every day,” she said.

She recalls finishing her primary school career on a positive note by being the only member of her school’s netball team to be chosen for the Gauteng trials and then beginning high school and being placed in the D team.

“I pushed myself and was selected to join the A team a year later, only because I never gave up.”

For Lalique, netball tests her determination and she considers the most difficult games to be the most memorable.

“Pushing yourself to be the best version of yourself is important. My ambition is to become a Protea. Netball keeps me emotionally and mentally strong.
“I research my opponents before a game and enjoy a healthy mix of quiet time spent praying and energetic music that regulates my adrenaline.”

The teen attributes a great deal of her inspiration and motivation to her coach.
Lalique needs to raise R30 000 to take part in the Dubai netball tour in December.

A recent golf day fundraiser at ERPM Golf Club helped her reach the halfway mark in this regard.

“I cannot wait to take part in this international tournament and experience netball at this level. I am super excited,” said Lalique.

“Learning from and being exposed to the diverse range of athletes taking part will benefit me and my growth, and could lead to invitations to further international events.”

In order to stay in the game and help her teammates become physically stronger, Lalique wants to pursue a degree in sports physiotherapy.
