Qhubeka AC thrilled about success of marathon

Sunward Park’s Qhubeka Athletic Club is thrilled after the success of its second annual Human Rights Day Race on March 21 at the School of Achievement in Germiston.

The club’s marketing head, Ntsiki Mbatha, said the race attracted over 1 200 runners, more than double the number from the previous year.

Mbatha said this increase signalled the community’s growth and enthusiasm for the race.

“We are incredibly excited about the remarkable success of our race this year. The overwhelming support and participation from the community speaks volumes about the race’s impact and significance,” said Mbatha.

The race was themed Equality in Running. Mbatha said this was to promote unity, inclusivity and philanthropy.

Bright Mikolongwe and Tristan Torr walked away with the men’s and women’s half-marathon titles, while Ziyavuya Mwahla and Tashia Mbobo won the men’s and women’s 10km events.

Mbatha explained that they were inundated with glowing feedback from the participants, saying it underscored the club’s dedication and commitment to delivering an exceptional event for all runners.

“The race received an abundance of glowing reviews and feedback, highlighting the exceptional organisation, vibrant energy and warm hospitality exhibited by our members,” she said.

Qhubeka chairperson Benzi Tenza said the second year is always difficult, but he was thankful to his team and the sponsors for making the event successful.

“Our sponsors’ contribution was instrumental in ensuring the success and smooth execution of the race,” he said.

The chairperson thanked the runners for lacing up their running shoes again to support the event, saying their enthusiasm and passion for running were pivotal in making the event unforgettable.

Tenza expressed his gratitude to his club’s members for their hard work behind the scenes and the clubs and organisations that supported the event.

“As plans begin to take shape for the next Human Rights Day race, Qhubeka AC eagerly anticipates the opportunity to again unite the community in celebration and camaraderie under the banner of equality in running.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone back for another memorable Human Rights Day race in 2025. Together, we will continue to make strides towards promoting inclusivity, unity, and the spirit of giving back,” said Tenza.
