BAC mourns death of long-serving member

The club will remember Van der Merwe's kind heart, infectious smile, and the way he made everyone feel valued as they crossed the finish line.

Long-standing Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) member Pete van der Merwe died on January 6.

He had been part of BAC for about 20 years.

The club could not provide more information regarding the circumstances of the athlete’s death.

According to club chairperson, Karen Bradshaw, their hearts are heavy with sympathy.

“We will remember him as an athlete, running events commentator and friend.

“As a former athlete and runner, he understood the sacrifices made by the athletes and he brought the same commitment to his running commentary with his incredible knowledge of all the athletes and their achievements,” said Bradshaw.

The chairperson pointed out Van der Merwe’s vibrant personality and great sense of humour made races fun and informative for spectators.

“He will be remembered for his kind heart, infectious smile, and the way he made everyone feel valued as they crossed the finish line.

“Dear Pete, we hope you smile at the lives you have touched and the legacy you left behind, we will always remember your happy smile and laugh,” she concluded.

BAC will hold a minute of silence for Van der Merwe before its time trials at the Boksburg Stadium on January 10 at 18:00.
