Boksburg North SAPS football team joins new league

The team is still finding its feet in the new league and lost its first game.

The Boksburg North SAPS football team is now officially part of the Ekurhuleni North Football League for police officers

According to the team’s chairperson, Sergeant Bhuti Kunene, they are excited about being part of the development.

Boksburg North played their first league against Midrand SAPS on November 29, where they lost 2-1.

Speaking to the Boksburg Advertiser about the outcome of the game and joining the league, Kunene said: “It was challenging and we are still trying to find our feet. We will now have to see what the rest of the league has in store for us.

“Furthermore, we had a shortage of players. Our coach Andrew Mpati had to be on the field the entire game,” said Kunene.

The team’s next game will be on December 6, where they will go head-to-head against Tembisa SAPS at the Boksburg Stadium.

Boksburg North was previously in the East Rand Football SAPS League but decided not to be part of the league following an incident at a game against Katlehong North SAPS in Katlehong on September 6.

Kunene explained one of the Katlehong North players received a red card in the first half but helped to score a goal early in the second half even though he was not supposed to be on the field.
Boksburg North forfeited the game, leaving the score at 1-0.

General secretary of the East Rand Football Association, SA Mbatha, said Boksburg North should have lodged an official complaint instead of walking away from the game. He highlighted the team has walked away from games in the past.
