Club merger will help boost young cricket talent

The new club is already doing well in the league.

The Boksburg Cricket Club and Christian Brothers’ College Old Boys have merged to produce more quality players for the South African cricket fraternity.

The teams merged for the cricket season, which began on October 1. The club is now known as CBCOB Boksburg Cricket Club.

The chairperson and coach of CBC Old Boys Boksburg Cricket Club Willie Bernhardt said both chairpersons of the clubs decided to allow players to play better cricket by combining the two teams.

“The two schools that used to produce good cricket players in the Ekurhuleni region – CBC Boksburg and Dr EG Jansen – have been struggling to produce high-quality cricketers in the past five years. As clubs and schools, we are trying to re-establish form and produce quality players.

“The other factor is the ever-deteriorating municipalities around the country is making it difficult to prepare fields and quality cricket pitches on a seasonal basis at municipal grounds.

“The main ground for the new club will be CBC Boksburg, where they will play all home matches,” he said.
He added the club was also a continuation of an already established structure at CBC Old Boys.

“This will hopefully help the Boksburg cricket fraternity to get stronger as we are working with local schools, such as Laerskool Concordia, Laerskool Baanbreker and Parkdene Primary, to build a solid foundation for cricket in Boksburg.

“We want to draw more youngsters into the club structures,” he explained.

CBC Old Boys Boksburg Cricket Club began its T20 Premier League spell on a high note by defeating both Tembisa Cricket Club and Duduza Cricket Club on home soil on October 1.

They then won against Benoni Northerns and were defeated by Kempton Park Cricket Club. Both matches took place on October 8 (away).

CBCOB Boksburg Cricket Club will play Actonville Spurs at Lords Cricket Ground, Actonville, on October 15.
