The EKB Bowling AGM hosted at Boksburg Bowling Club on October 1 was for all bowling clubs within the Greater East Rand District.

This meeting highlighted the annual calendar and showcased special announcements and achievements of bowlers and clubs for 2023 and the new season of 2024.

Special awards included the Club of the Year awarded to Edenvale Bowling Club for their performance during the 2023 league season and growing from strength to strength.

Another award was given to Marina Brink, a lifetime member of Kempton Park Bowling Club, as an honorary member within the district for her outstanding contribution to bowls and her commitment to the sport for over 40 years.

Exciting events are lined up within the Ekurhuleni District calendar, including the kick-off of the popular district open singles, pairs, trips and fours competitions and the commencement of the new season league.

“These competitions and the start of the new league season bring the entry of exciting bowling talent, affording the district more growth,” said Alana Warrender, the EKB president.

With 20 clubs in the district, one of the main goals that Alana would like to work on in 2024 is to grow membership in each club, starting from a younger age to allow the sport more longevity as bowls have become a lot more of an exciting sport.

Joining a Bowling club is easy. Email secretary.ekb@gmail.com and she will send you the details of a club closest to you. Most clubs offer free coaching and also have spare bowls to use, should a person not have their own set.

To achieve this goal, they have created a new executive committee, including the following members:
• Alana Warrender: president Delville Bowling Club
• John McArdle: vice president Alberton Bowling Club
• Bruce Milne: vice president Redding Bowling Club
• Leigh Austin: competition Secretary Benoni Bowling Club
• Marianne Hunt: secretary Kempton Park Bowling Club
• Petro Gibbons: treasurer Kempton Park Bowling Club
• Gerald May: committee Edenvale Bowling Club
• Chantal Henn nee Grotto: committee Northmead Bowling Club
• Rachel Giesing: committee Benoni Town
• Desiré Hide: committee Brackenhurst Bowling Club
• Willem Viljoen: committee Modderbee Bowling Club
• Michael Hunt: committee Kempton Park Bowling Club

What to look forward to in January for the EKB Bowling District is the kick-off of the Gauteng challenge, featuring other districts such as Sables, BGN, Sedibeng and JBA who would be playing against each other to claim the title.

“The Ekurhuleni District is represented by the symbolism of the rose, Izimbali (in Zulu), as seen in our emblem. As the rose, the bowlers in our district love the game and are passionate about the sport, which is why the district features high-level bowlers,” added Warrender.
