CBC lifesaver aims for a new record

Learner Aiden Bornman has a good track record as a swimmer.

Christian Brothers’ College (CBC) matric learner Aiden Bornman (18) will strive to set a new record at the Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships in Canada from September 13 to 17.

The swimmer will don the SA senior team colours at his first Commonwealth championships.

Aiden Bornman aims to do well in the Commonwealth’s lifesaving category.

Bornman said he aimed to beat his current time of 01:05 and set a new record in the 100m rescue medley category.

“I’m aiming to complete the rescue medley competition in 01:03. I put in a lot of work to prepare for the competition. I train 20 hours a week,” he explained.

He said he performed well in the DHL Lifesaving National Club Championships for inclusion in the SA senior team.

“I managed to secure the victor ludorum and receive an extra medal for the surf swimming race. I believe I performed well in the national club championships, but there’s room for improvement.

“Currently, it’s a bit stressful to prepare for the Commonwealth and write my prelims as well, but I aim to achieve both tasks,” he stated.

He said he learnt to swim at a young age, and aged eight, joined the Boksburg Aquatic Saints Club (BAS) and later the Cardinals Aquatic Club (CAC) and is still a member of both teams.

“I do lifesaving at BAS and sprint swimming for CAC. Both my coaches from the clubs have been helpful. Katija Marshall is my lifesaving coach, and Douglas Erasmus is my sprint swimming coach.

“My dream is to compete in the Olympics sprint swimming because the Olympics do not offer lifesaving,” he expressed.

Bornman said being determined and working hard at their craft made good sportsmen.

The swimming captain, prefect and head of house for CBC thanked his family for supporting him. He also credited his coaches and everyone in the aquatics fraternity.
