Parkrand karateka claim 150 medals at invitational

Hard work and determination is at the core of this dojo’s ethos.

A squad of 98 athletes from the Goju Karate Academy, Parkrand, raked in 150 medals during the annual Goshukan Invitational Championships at Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre on June 3.

With participants ranging from dinkies aged three) to more mature athletes well into their 50s, the dojo competed against 14 local clubs, with a total of 320 karateka taking to the mats.

“Our athletes participated in various categories including traditional kata, traditional kumite, traditional team kata, rotational team kumite, kobudo long weapons and kobudo short weapons,” said fourth dan instructor, sensei Tarryn Madgwick.

“We are extremely proud of our karateka’s perseverance and determination as well as their discipline during the competition.”

With a medal tally of 49 gold, 49 silver and 52 bronze, Madgwick said that the results show that competitors are continuously honing their skills as they prepare for upcoming tournaments.
