‘9mm’ defeated by Landoyi

The fighter should be back in the hexagon in August.

Van Dyk Park’s Robert ‘9mm’ Swanepoel suffered a loss at the EFC104 at the EFC Performance Institute recently.

Lisaka Landoyi defeated Swanepoel via three-round unanimous decision in the catchweight bout.

Even though he lost to Landoyi whose record after the win climbed to 1-0-0, Swanepoel said he is happy with results as he took this fight on 24 hours’ notice.

“Landoyi was a tough opponent and gave me a hard fight,” said Swanepoel, whose record is now 1-8-0.

Swanepoel explained his next fight should take place in August. The details are still to be confirmed.

Regarding his preparation for the bout, Swanepoel said: “I’m constantly working on my wrestling skills and ground work because that is my weak point at this stage.”

When and why did you start training in martial arts?
At around seven years of age.

How did you transition to MMA?
MMA attracted me because it’s all the fighting styles put together. There is more competition.

JKA first dan.

How did you get your fight name?
I like firearms and consider my fists as 9mm bullets.

What is your favourite technique and why?
Double leg takedown. I love slamming my opponent.

Who is your hero and why?
Bruce Lee. I watched all his movies as a child. I am amazed by his hand speed.

Tell us something interesting about yourself?
I love spending time with my family around a braai.

What does it mean for you to fight in the EFC?
It is a dream come true for both myself and my dad who passed away in January 2018. He would have been super proud of me.
