Four BAC athletes return home with silver medals

The BAC athletes performed well during the Comrades Marathon race.

Four Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) athletes won silver medals at the Comrades Marathon on June 11.

Paul Kasu scooped silver in the senior category along with Justin Dunn, and Johan Meyer also grabbed silver in the age 40 category. David Gumede also achieved a silver medal in the grandmaster category.

Ian Manchest got his Comrades Marathon green number.

Not all the BAC athletes managed to finish the race, but Ian Manchest and Johan Burger obtained their green numbers.

Kasu said he is happy with his overall performance, although his main target was to complete the race in a time of 6:30. “I finished in 6:37, which is faster than last year when my finish time was 7:19.

“The unplanned stop I made in Winston Park during the race affected my momentum, otherwise I believe I would have finished according to my goal,” explained Kasu.

He plans to compete in the Comrades Marathon next year. He only needs to do well in one marathon race this year to qualify for the 2024 Comrades.

Gamede said the race was good for him.

“I didn’t get my desired finish time, but I still clocked a time of 7:13:16, which is seven minutes faster than my finish time last year.

“I have added another silver medal to my collection, which I’m happy about. I came second in my grandmaster category, the winner only beating me by two minutes,” said Gamede.

He added that he was named the second fastest Comrades Marathon race finisher among the BAC athletes that competed.

“I’m happy with my overall performance.”
