EGA swimmers achieve personal milestones at nationals

This was the largest team the organisation has sent to represent the district at the games.

The Eastern Gauteng Aquatics (EGA) sent a team of 40 swimmers to represent the district at the South African Senior and B National Championship in Gqeberha from April 12 to 16.

According to EGA president Cheryl Knight, this was the largest team the organisation has sent to represent the district at the games.

The star-studded event included the country’s elite swimmers and Olympic Games medalists Tatjana Schoenmaker, Chad Le Clos and veteran Roland Schoeman who were all trying to qualify for the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Japan in July.

The event was also a qualification gala for the FINA Junior World Championships, Commonwealth Games and World Student Games.

Knight thanked the athletes for representing raising the EGA flag high.

“The overall performance by Team EGA was outstanding with a number of swimmers making both the A and B finals,” she said.

Results for Team EGA for nationals:

1. Simone Moll – bronze medal and a B World Championships qualifying time for the 50m breaststroke.
2. Kian Keylock – bronze for the 400m individual medley event.
3. Kris Mihaylov – bronze medal for the 800m freestyle and 400m individual medley events.
4. Brenden Crawford – bronze medal and a B World Championships qualifying time for the 100m breaststroke and a silver and a B World Championships qualifying time for the 50m breaststroke.

Para Swimmers classifications results:

1. Kat Swanepoel (S1 – S13 Multiclass Disability) – Four SA records for the 50m Freestyle; 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke and the 150m individual medley.
• Five gold medals for 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 100m breaststroke; 100m freestyle and 150m individual medley.
• One silver medal for 50m butterfly.
• Six A qualifying times for the Para World Champs.

2. Cornelle Leach (S14 multiclass disability) – A qualifying time in the 100m breaststroke event and a B qualifying time in the 50m freestyle for the Para World Champs.
3. Nikita Douglas (S1 – S13 multiclass disability) – bronze medal for the 200m individual medley and 50m butterfly.
4. JP Nel (S14 multiclass disability) – silver for the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke and bronze for the 50m butterfly, 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle.
5. Geosh Nienaber (S1 – S13 multiclass disability) – bronze for the 50m butterfly, 100m breaststroke and gold for the 50m backstroke.
