BAC athletes do well in Sub-Youth Provincial championships

Seven Boksburg Athletics Club athletes are going to compete in the inter-provinicial sporting competition.

Boksburg Athletics Cub’s young athlete Kevin du Plessis pulled out a splendid performance by running faster than 14 of his challengers.

With this, he scooped a silver medal at the Central Gauteng Athletics Sub-Youth Provincial Championships U11 70m hurdles final race that took place at Boksburg City Stadium, on November 12.

Kevin looked hungrier to win the 70m hurdles race than his competitors, but he only managed to secure the second position clocking a time of 11.26, which had five seconds time difference from the winner of the race.

The coach of the Boksburg Athletics Club, Linda du Plessis, said she is happy with Kevin’s results because she expected that he would end in the first or second spot in the final hurdle race.

“I think he had a good finish time. This year we didn’t focus more on the 70m hurdles distance, because he is looking forward to his U12 year. This is his last year competing in the 70m distance as next year he will be competing in the 75m distance or more.

“He started training with me when he was in Grade One and this year he is in Grade Five.”

She said he finished in the second spot in the hurdles because he is a determined athlete.

“We are focusing on a lot of facets to develop him. We are working on his sporting ability by focusing on improving his speed, strength and character. If you want to be a good hurdler you have to improve your speed and that’s why he also competed in the 80m sprinting race.

“He competed there just to work on his speed. The main sporting code he wants to pursue is hurdles,” said Linda.

Linda added that her team did well in the overall Sub-Youth Provincial Championships because seven of her athletes made it to the inter-provincials competition that will take place on November 26.

Other athletes that did well in their races include Anzaret Strauss and Lihan Borman. Strauss finished second in the U11 80m and 100m sprinting final races and Borman, another Boksburg Athletics Club athlete, received a bronze medal in the U7 60m sprint race final with a time of 09.55.
