Boksburg bowlers awarded

The award comprised money and a trophy.

Boksburg Bowling Club members were awarded on October 1 for their performance in the club’s bowling competitions.

Sixteen players received awards for winning in their divisions, 12 players received awards for second places and two were awarded as the most improved players and the other two as overall winners.

Sonja Barnard, who received an overall winner, novice and ladies handicap award, said she is ecstatic to have done so well in the ladies handicap competition.

“I was competing against experienced players. Of the five competitions I competed in this year, I won the handicap and novice competitions. I don’t think my overall performance is bad because I’m still a rookie and have time to improve,” said Barnard.

She said that these are the first competitions she has won in her career, excluding the league and social competitions she has participated in.

“I decided to be a bowler because I love the camaraderie. The other reason I bowl is that I get a chance to spend time with my husband, who is also a bowler. People need to know that bowling has many health benefits and they will never regret taking part.

“My goal is to win the Champion of Championship competition and play for Ekurhuleni Bowls. I want to also go as far as playing with the likes of Colleen Piketh and Jason Evans.”

Alan Elson, who won the men’s senior singles, said he competed against the best players and only luck led him to win.
“I would like to salute the bowlers that I competed against. I love bowling and I don’t see myself quitting the sport anytime soon,” said Elson.

President of Boksburg Bowling Club, Ian Croasdale, said he is proud of his players and wishes them all the best in their future bowling competitions.

“We are preparing for the league and we hope to do well,” explained Croasdale.

He added that he is appealing to old and young people to join the club. The club is situated at 29 Church Street, Boksburg.
