East Rand Nomad players excel in SA nationals

The bowlers promise to carry the same mentality in next year's Nomad SA nationals.

Two players from East Rand Nomad Bowls Club, Allen Elson and Basie Barnard, outclassed their competitors at the Nomad SA Nationals in Cape Town.

The other players of the club finished in good places in their categories of the tournament. Hennie Coetzer occupying the 11th spot and Johnny Vigers the 16th spot in his category.
The tournament took place from August 7 to 11.

Elson won the district trophy, the top player of the tournament trophy and 3rd trophy. Barnard won the overall lead trophy.

“This was my second stint in the tournament. We left early in the morning on the day before the tournament and when I landed there I started practising. I think my preparation for the tournament led me to win it. I’m going to also compete in the tournament that’s going to take place next year.

“I enjoyed the tournament and was not expecting to win it but am glad I did. Next year I will be going there to defend my titles.”

The president of the Nomad Bowls South Africa, Grant Sloane, who is also a member of the East Rand Nomad Bowls, said he is proud of his fellow club members.

“The performance they showcased in the tournament means a lot to me, they made me feel proud.
“East Rand Nomad Bowls was established 40 years ago. It’s a non-profit organisation that brings bowling players from various bowling teams in the East Rand for a good cause.

“As the East Rand Nomad Bowls, we have adopted various shelters that we are assisting. We have events that we call outings where we raise funds to help the shelters we have adopted as the Nomads. We do the outings once a month in different bowling clubs around East Rand,” said Sloane.

He also added that Boksburg Bowling Club is turning 106 years this year.
