NWS karatekas ready for Commonwealth tournament

They both want to enjoy the Commonwealth Karate Championships.

Two karatekas, Aiden Corregedor (15) and Kayleen Chetty (15) of New World Shotokan (NWS), were selected to represent South Africa at the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Birmingham in September.

This comes after Corregedor obtained a bronze medal in kumite and Chetty received a gold medal also kumite, at the recent Arnold Classic tournament.

Chetty said the Arnold Classic was held at Roodepoort and although she was guaranteed a silver medal, because of her karate ranking, she managed to defeat the fighters she was up against to get a gold medal.

“Now I’m preparing for England. I’m going overseas for the experience, even if I don’t win I will be satisfied. It will be my first time going overseas, but it won’t be my first time competing at an international level. I have competed in the international championships that were held in South Africa in 2018.

“I competed in the championships when I was only nine and I won a bronze medal. The upcoming international competition will comprise various karate styles, but I will be fighting in kumite. I’m preparing for the tournament by training at home and here at the dojo,” said Chetty.

Corregedor said he is not pleased with his result and performance at the Arnold Classic.

“I would like to improve by winning at the international competition. I will appreciate any type of medal at the championships because it is a prominent event. There will be a lot of countries, and because of that, it will be hard for me to win. I’m going to compete in kumite.

“In preparation for the championships, I’m training four days a week. I have those sessions to improve my karate skills and technics,” said Corregedor.

Takis Chaniotakos, who is the sensei of the karatekas that are going to England, said he’s teaching his students basic karate styles and technics, but with Corregedor and Chetty he’s going to up the game and take their sessions to the highest level.
