Jaguars claim top honours at nationals

The men's team claimed a gold medal while the women got a bronze.

The Gauteng East Jaguars men’s open team successfully defended their title at the Action Cricket inter-provincial tournament in Edenvale from May 24 to 28.

The Jaguars faced 11 sides over the five days and finished second in their group, securing their place in the final where they beat Northern Gauteng by 48 runs.

They posted 114 runs and dismissed the Pretoria-based side for 66 to cap off two years of total dominance in the sport.

Coach Wayne Lingard attributed their success to teamwork and brotherhood.

“The bulk of this team has played together for a long time now. Coaching them has become easier as they have been together for so long and been through scenarios together.

“The Gauteng East Jaguar brand has made its mark nationally and it is because of the pride we have for our arena and Province that we have succeeded. When we put on that Jaguar shirt, one just finds an extra gear somewhere to go the extra mile.”

Lingard said the team’s commitment to action sport has led to several of his players earning national colours while some will represent the country at the Indoor Cricket World Cup later this year.

“The passion they have playing the game is the same passion they have for everything else in their lives.
“We want to be the best and compete at an elite level. We are blessed with so many talented cricket, hockey and netball players in our province. The Jaguar brand has now laid the foundation over the last few years to dominate.

“We have earned respect of other provinces and will keep on doing our job in a very professional manner.”
The ladies open team is one of the most feared sides in action sport, finishing third in the tournament.

“We would’ve loved to play in the final but we were beaten in the semis by a very determined Gauteng Central team. We then beat Western Province in the third place play-off to claim a bronze medal,” said captain Liechen Reid.

Reid told the paper that their success was due to the camaraderie in the team.

“We are team full of exciting and talented players. Although we haven’t spent much time together, our amazing team spirit and camaraderie has led to our success. Every single player that stepped onto the court for every game did so with passion for the game and willingness to give their all for the team.”

She added that action sport’s accessibility and relaxed environment was the reason more girls fall in love with cricket.

“It introduces many young girls to cricket in a friendly and casual environment. It also teaches us to master all aspects of the game – bowling, batting and fielding.

“The skills they acquire and thrill of playing is what leads to many moving to outdoor cricket where the possibilities of turning professional are endless.”

Reid said that women’s cricket needs more television airtime and investment to grow.

Michelle Homann was awarded best batter of the tournament for the ladies while the men’s George Viviers won the competition’s MVP.

Benoni Action Sport’s Christine Straussner said she was thrilled with both teams’ achievements.
